Working to generate an energising sense of enchantment, that places priority on the power of observation and invigorates embodied perception. Sprites explores the allure of liquid and light. I aim to embrace and investigate the fluidity, movement and hypnotic nature of the fizzy drink Sprite in particular, to generate a flirtatious, whimsical environment of ambiguity.
The sweetness, fluidity and effervescent essence of Sprite drove this particular work. The movement of this particular soft drink itself feels distinctly uplifting. By definition, the word Sprite itself refers to a supernatural, ethereal entity in European mythology, often depicted as fairy-like creatures. Not only does the term sprite refer to a mythical creature, but is the name of a language spoken by forest gnomes and rock gnomes. With the themes of magic, camp and feminine ecstasy sitting at the heartbeat of my practice, I have been reflecting on ideas of embodiment and ephemerality and transient materials, through moving image works. Sprites is designed to be a transient, enlivening space to soak.
Fergus constructs a charmingly peculiar soundscape. Using the sonic materials of Sprite, cans and various loop FX pedal percussion. Designed to build the atmosphere over time as the viewer swims in the sprightly soup; A mysterious, syrup of noise bathes and invigorates the space.
